The Advantages Of Becoming A Live-In Carer

Becoming a carer has many rewards. Here we look at just some of them, and look at how being a live-in carer, in particular, can be an amazing job opportunity and life experience. It is well-known that live-in care jobs provide one of the most rewarding careers in the care sector.

Live-in care is an increasingly popular choice for people who need help with care but would like to stay in the familiar and comfortable surroundings of their own homes. With this kind of life choice becoming more and more popular, there are plenty of job opportunities arising for people to become live-in carers.

Regardless of how new you are to caring, or even if you’re still being trained, live-in care is certainly a career you should consider if you want a career within the caring profession. It is extremely rewarding and there are many benefits. Here are just some of the benefits of live-in care jobs:

Being Able To Build A Relationship With Your Clients

In certain areas of the care profession you don’t have the chance to get to know clients properly. Sadly, in specific jobs within care there isn’t even time to chat to the person, and the task in hand is prioritised to the point of just pleasantries being exchanged. This is not an uncommon situation and it starves a naturally caring person of the opportunity to build a full and enriching relationship with their client. With live-in care or  home care jobs there’s so much time for you to enjoy being with your client, and getting to know them. It becomes a major part of your job role in order to build the trust needed for a wonderful carer to client relationship.

Good Financial Prospects to Becoming a Carer

As much as in your heart you love caring and you have taken the job because you want to care for people, money is, obviously, an important part of any job. You have to be able to pay for you own accommodation, buy food and other essentials and support you own family to the best of your ability. So salary does matter. Fortunately, the financial prospects of home-care jobs are good and you’ll be paid well because the job requires experience and dedication.

Time To Do Your Job Properly

It doesn’t matter how good a carer is, if a job is highly pressurised and speed and efficiency are the priority, then they only get time to do the basics. There isn’t much rest between jobs and the little things that make a big difference to clients are neglected. This results in less contented clients, and also a less satisfying caring job. After all, you went into caring to do your job properly and if you can’t, you don’t get that same job satisfaction. When it comes to live-in care you do get the opportunity to completely flourish as a carer, because you have the time. You can have chats, you can help your client pick some flowers from the garden, or prepare them the meals they love.

The Ability To Enjoy A More Varied Job

With a standard care job you’re helping somebody get dressed, helping them wash and helping them with eating and drinking. With live-in care jobs the role is so much more. You’ll be taking your client to appointments, you’ll be taking them to social events, you’ll be chatting with your client and potentially enjoying activities with your client. On top of this you get to take your time doing the essential jobs so they are done properly and with consideration.

The Ability To Feel Like You’re Making A Difference

44% of Millennials feel that meaningful work that helps others is more important than high pay. Live-in care jobs are certainly a role that offers you the ability to feel like you’re making a difference. Becoming a carer means you are  providing somebody with all the care they need to live a dignified and healthy life, plus the company, conversation and little touches to give them a happy life. The financial side of this kind of care worker job also means you don’t have to compromise on your pay, you can get paid well and make a difference when you have a live-in care job.

Achieving Nationally Recognised Qualifications

Care workers have a number of opportunities for career progression through a series of health and social care diplomas from City & Guilds. These range from the GCSE equivalent Level 2 Diploma through the A level-equivalent Level 3 and then on to Level 4, which  is equivalent to a Foundation Degree or Higher National Diploma. All of these qualifications are recognised by employers and help improve prospects for carers looking for live-in care jobs .

Hopefully you’re feeling optimistic about a potential career in live-in care. The financial and emotional rewards, and the high job satisfaction, of becoming a carer make it an incredible career prospect for anybody interested in providing high quality care.

Another great article. My parents had a live-in care package and their carers were of all ages and nationalities. One was studying for a degree in her spare time and had plenty of time and space to study.

  • Friends who are self-employed live in carers, enjoy the flexibility as they can choose when they work and for how long so that they can incorporate their work alongside their lifestyle.

  • It’s so good to hear that the live-in carers have had a positive experience of caring for an elderly person in their home. They are providing a vital service but also able to study, if that’s what they want, or have some flexibility in their own life.

Although residential care homes are the most common option there is growing awareness of another option: live-in care or home care. With the growing awareness of home care more and more people are choosing this for themselves or for an elderly relative as an option where the person needing care can stay in familiar surroundings and have the consistency of the same one or two carers all the time. It is also a more rewarding role for those becoming a carer. […]
